The Global Alliance of Special Economic Zones (GASEZ) recognized that Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) as an “SDG Model Zone Partner” in recognition of the zone’s pioneering efforts in serving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SCZONE obtained this certificate as part of the list of 50 SDG Model Zones Partners. Which were selected from 7,000 special economic zones represented by the “GASEZ” alliance.
The candidates for the model zones for the sustainable development goals were selected through the World Investment Report for 2019 issued by UNCTAD according to several criteria, the most important of them are Commitment to sustainable development, promotion of investment in the SDGs, levels of social, environmental and governance standards and compliance; and linkages and spillovers. This award heralds further cooperation in the coming period, and access to the best practices followed by the economic zones, which can apply to others.
This classification was announced during the World Investment Forum which was held in the United Arab Emirates in October 2023, and the second annual conference of “GASEZ”, which was held in Barcelona, Spain on November 9, 2023.
“We appreciate that SCZONE representing Egypt in this alliance, in addition to receiving international appreciation and praise because SCZONE has been based on environmentally friendly systems since its establishment, in addition to what it has achieved in the field of green fuel production and green bunkering, its keenness to accelerate the pace of reducing emissions in the industrial and maritime field and to enhance cooperation with various international partners in this field. SCZONE is now seeking to encourage investors to manufacture green products that depend on green fuel in its various forms.” Waleid Gamal El-Dien, chairman of SCZone, said.
It is worth noting that GASEZ was launched through the cooperation of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) with seven global, regional, and national associations representing more than 7,000 special economic zones. It aims to modernize special economic zones around the world and maximize their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. SCZone was the only representative of Egypt on the 2023-2024 list of nominations for model areas for the Sustainable Development Goals.
