Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said that the current goal is to restructure the environmental sector in line with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi through three main axes; namely reducing pollution, sustaining natural resources, and dealing with environmental crises.
She made the remarks in a speech which she delivered on behalf of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli during the 6th Forum on Strategies for Transition to Green Economy that kicked off earlier Monday.
She noted that the Green Economy Forum, which first mooted in 2018, has contributed to raising awareness among the Egyptian people, especially youths, over the past years, as the green economy file was not among the files in which Egyptians are interested.
She said the Ministry managed to attain the targets of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) which was held in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh.
The Ministry is keen on linking the environmental file to people’s daily life, she said, noting that the ministry with all parties concerned to contribute to developing technological solutions to achieve efficient performance and effectively respond to local and global climate and environmental challenges.
Fouad also reviewed efforts exerted over the past two years to develop the waste management sector in Egypt in light of the environmental dimension as one of the most important dimensions of Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy 2030 and Egypt’s plan for the transition to a green economy.
She noted that the first law regulating and managing waste in Egypt was Law No. 202 of 2020 regarding the regulation of waste management.
The minister referred to a project to promote circular economy practices and encourage the adoption of greener materials, products, and production processes as well as sustainable and eco-friendly business models.
Fouad highlighted Egypt’s role as a key player at the regional and international levels vis-a-vis the environmental file, especially in light of regional and international environmental agreements that help Egypt promote sustainable development.
She noted that efforts are underway to integrate the concept of climate and environmental change into curricula of various educational stages in order to change the culture of society with an aim to be able to confront world developments in the coming years.
