EU Ambassador in Cairo Ivan Surkos and UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Assistant Director-General for North Africa and the Near East Abdel-Salam Ould Ahmed stressed that regional conflicts are one of the major challenges besetting sustainable development in the Arab world.
Surkos said ” the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Agenda 2030 cannot be realized in isolation from addressing many violent conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa Region.”
Surkos underlined the importance of settling these conflicts in the coming period, calling for adopting political actions that would contain crises in order to achieve sustainable development.
For his part, Ahmed said “the Arab world can never have bright future without realizing peace and eradicating poverty, especially as about 30 percent of the region’s population is living under the poverty line.”
Ahmed said youths should be aware about the regional problems to contribute to their solution and realize peace in the region for Arab countries to move ahead towards development.
Surkos and Ahmed made the remarks during the Arab Sustainable Development Week which opened in Egypt on Sunday under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
Surkos commended the Arab League for its efforts to ditch the challenges bogging the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The EU diplomat thanked the Arab League for organizing such events that contribute to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
Meanwhile, Surkos noted that the European Bank decided to deal with crises hampering sustainable development, topped by climate change, land and immigration, adding that ending poverty was the Sustainable Development Goal 1 because it is the main catalyst that would push forward the rest of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He highlighted the importance of joining hands in the face of challenges confronting the SDGs which also include malnutrition, water pollution and improper management of resources.
Surkos said the Arab Sustainable Development Week and other similar events offers a great opportunity for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and opening new vistas of cooperation between the Arab League and the European Union.
Surkos accentuated that the EU is keen on participating in several sessions of the gathering to underline the importance of partnerships to realize Sustainable Development and the 2030 Agenda.
He underscored the importance of managing resources in a different way in addition to securing clean water, curbing malnutrition, eliminating poverty and ending conflicts from which several Arab states are suffering. This will help ditching the challenges besetting sustainable development.
Surkos highlighted the importance of realizing justice to ensure long-term stability in communities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
