The Enactus Egypt team from Cairo University won the Enactus World Cup 2019 Champion and was awarded the Ford Better World Award of $50,000, according to Enactus official website.
The team developed a self-sufficient social enterprise, offering a high-quality organic pad, made by women for women. Rosie, which started as a women’s sanitation project and grew into a social impact business, markets and sells organic pads that are eco-friendly and affordable. Women were traditionally unable to afford sanitary pads; they typically sold and suffered healthwise from using pads that contained plastic. Rosie is taking measurable steps to drive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, clean water and sanitation; 8, decent work and economic growth; and 10, reduced inequalities.
“We wanted to give women their dignity back and we did,” said Roaa Ahmed of the Enactus Cairo University team. “Hard work does pay off and deliver impact. We are proud to be Enactus Egypt.”
The top 3 runners-up from Enactus Canada at Lambton College; Enactus Germany at University of Mannheim; and Enactus United States at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, also earned Ford Better World Award prize monies.
Enactus is a global non-profit with more than 72,000 student members from 37 countries across 1,730 university campuses.
“These NextGen leaders demonstrated entrepreneurial action with projects and businesses that create immense, collective impact around the world,” said Rachael Jarosh, President and CEO, Enactus. “Through innovation and collaboration, the championship team has developed sustainable solutions to transform lives using business models as a force for good.”
“Enactus World Cup 2019 celebrates entrepreneurial leaders whose enterprises are thriving, innovating and serving as an inspiration for the next generation of Enactus students. They are shaping the future, today,” said Jim Vella, President of Ford Motor Company Fund and member of the Enactus Board of Directors. “We congratulate Enactus Egypt and the team from Cairo University.”
