Social Solidarity Minister Nivine Kabbag said the ministry allocated EGP 1.4 billion last year to promote the role played by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in offering necessary services to those most in need.
She noted that the ministry established 31 social solidarity units at universities to offer services for students and empower them in addition to paying fees for about 4.8 million school students and offering 680 scholarships for university students.
Kabbag made the remarks during a ceremony organized by Misr El kheir Foundation (MEK) to honor the winners of the 5th edition of the ‘Misr El Kheir’ prize for philanthropic and sustainable development work.
The award focuses on serving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG2) on “No Poverty”. Nada Kitchen charity project of Nedaa Khair foundation in the Red Sea governorate copped the first award at EGP 250,000 , while the charitable endowment Project of the Sharia Association in Azab el Qasr won the second award of 200,000. The third award of EGP 150,000 went to charity kitchen project of the Sawadena Charity Association.
Kabbag said the 5th edition of the ‘Misr El Kheir’ prize for philanthropic and sustainable development work aims to support NGOs to attain the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Meanwhile, Kabbag highlighted climate change waves that cause natural resources crises and affect food security and economic conditions.
She asserted that climate change is the major threat for most needy and marginalized strata, referring to the fallout of climate change of arable lands, water, pollution, and food security.
Kabbag highlighted the need for urgent action to secure food under SDG 8.
She said the best way to wriggle out of these crises is investment in resources, rationalizing consumption, scientific research in boosting resources and investment in humans and the coming generations.
She noted that Egypt is witnessing a leap in civil work with the full support of the wise political leadership that believes in its role in social protection and sustainable partnerships development.
She referred to several initiatives by the civil society in the fields of environment, education and health.
