Egypt’s renowned musician Omar Khairat was named as the 2023 Cultural Personality of the Year of the 2023 Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA), while Egypt’s AlAin Publishing was the award’s Publishing & Technology category.
The SZBA Board of Trustees endorsed the Scientific Committee decision to choose Khairat as the Cultural Personality of the Year in recognition of his distinguished efforts and remarkable musical works, which transformed the way musical works are presented, and where he added his own personal touch that can be seen in several musical introductions to films and multiple dramas.
Honoring musician Omar Khairat with the SZBA’s Cultural Personality of the Year award reflects the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s commitment to advancing its global position as a capital of art and creativity. It also underlines Abu Dhabi’s classification as a ‘City of Music’ by UNESCO for its efforts to support music and bridge the gap between the Arab world and other cultures, as well as its contributions towards promoting openness and cultural exchange, supporting the music sector, and enhancing opportunities for integration across societies and generations.
Also, Egypt’s Dar ElAin Publishing won the award’s category of Publishing and Technology. Dar AlAin General Manager Fatma Elboudy was handed over the award.
Dar AlAin aims to provide knowledge to Arab readers in the fields of science, culture, and translation, with a special focus on quality. ElAin Publishing’s diverse publications cover several disciplines, including scientific culture – the area it began its journey in the publishing world with – as well as literature and literary studies, where the publisher has made significant strides by supporting the publication of high-value literary works and studies, not limiting itself to established authors, but also providing opportunities for creative youth.
Organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), part of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the 2023 edition of the award received the highest number of submissions to date; 3,151 from 60 countries including 22 Arab nations and 38 countries from around the world.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan presented trophies to winners in the following categories: Literature – Ali Jaafar Alallaq from Iraq; Arab Culture in Other Languages – Mathieu Tillier from France; Young Author – Said Khatibi from Algeria; Translation – Chokri Al Saadi from Tunisia; Art and Literary Criticism – Dr. Jalila Al Tritar from Tunisia and Publishing and Technology – Dar ElAin Publishing from Egypt.
In addition, Sheikh Zayed honored the renowned Egyptian musician Omar Khairat, who received the Cultural Personality of the Year award in recognition of his contribution to shaping the collective cultural consciousness of the Arab region.
Established in 2006, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award honors intellectuals, researchers and authors who have made significant contributions to modern-day literature, social sciences, culture and knowledge.
