Egypt’s October 6 University was named the champion of the Enactus World Cup 2021 in which more than 36 universities worldwide took part.
October 6 University was among three other universities of the UK, Canada and Tunisia that managed to reach the finals of the contest.
The October 6 University team won the competition over its Cellurose, a multi-stage project that focuses on offering innovative scientific and environmental solutions to the problem of Nile rose ( also known as water hyacinth).
Nile rose consumes a lot of water and hampers fishermen during fishing as well as farmers during land irrigation, so that they used to collect it and burn it in remote areas.
The project managed to extract several products of Nile Rose, including Cellurose which is used in several industries as well as producing animal and fish feed and soil fertilizers.
The project is meant to offer three solutions; raising income of farmers and fishermen, improving standards of living and creating jobs in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal number 11 which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Also, instead of throwing away or burning the rose, each phase of Cellurose ensures a zero-waste model. To date, the project has prevented more than 1,500 pounds of waste from being burned.
The National Champions from October 6 University have assisted members of 80 villages with implementing Cellurose, which has elevated them above the poverty line and increased their income by more than 175 percent. The project has generated a total revenue of 268,000 Egyptian pounds.
The October 6 University team joined the international contest after winning the local competition this year in which over 40 governmental and private universities participated with about 6,700 students displaying their projects and innovative ideas for developing society to become a better world.
It is worth mentioning that the university won the second place in an international contest in the 2018 the competition for Enactus world cup held in the US. The team participated by a community service and development project known as Jasmine Flower. The same project won the first place in the Innovation Race for Sustainability which was held under the patronage of Finance In Motion in Germany in 2019.
