Egypt’s Pharaohs’ Golden Parade violin star Salma Sorour became the first female in Egypt and the Middle East region and the youngest to join Europe Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
In statements to CSR Egypt on Wednesday, Sorour said she won a position as first violin tutti at the orchestra – which is one of the most important world orchestras – after undergoing several tests.
She said it was a cut-throat competition as violinists from various parts of the world were vying for this post.
Sorour said the examining panel was astonished to hear that she was an Egyptian national and was only 20 years old.
Sorour said on her Facebook page that “It is my pleasure to announce my acceptance in one of the greatest orchestras in Europe Orchestre de la Suisse Romande for a a tutti first violin position, I’m 20 years old, by far the youngest in the orchestra, so wish me luck! this is one the greatest things I have achieved in my life, And I’d like to specially thank Mido El Shwekh for his effort with me to play as I did in the audition yesterday, and for the welcoming and kind person he is, it’s really a pleasure to know him. And prof. Medhat Abdel-salam for his efforts with me as well, and for lifting up my spirits and making me believe in myself when sometimes I felt unqualified for this position.. It all came together because of them.”
Egypt’s renowned international conductor Nader Abbasi hailed Salma Sorour’s success in joining this international orchestra, saying “Switzerland took Salma Sorour from Egypt..she was the violinist who drew the world’s attention at Egypt’s Pharaohs’ Golden Parade .”
He added “It is the best news ever.. Europe Orchestre de la Suisse Romande is one of the most famous and greatest orchestras in Europe…Congratulations Salma Sorour..Egypt is proud of you..All expectations came true..Thanks God.”
Salma Sorour was born in Cairo 2003, at the age of five, she attended violin classes of professor Marlis Younskhan. In 2010, she participated in Cairo Music Competition under the supervision of Conductor Ahmed El Saedi and she got the first place. Then, she joined the Cairo Conservatoire, the Academy of Arts in 2010-2011
She was one of the excellent students when she joined the conservatoire, she took part in several concerts at the Cairo Opera House, the Russian Culture Center and the American University in Cairo with the piano under the supervision of her professor Marlis Younskhan.
In 2012, she participated in the “Nutcracker”- International Television Contest for Young musicians in Moscow where she was selected as one of the best four competitors and won the contest diploma after she succeeded to reach the final round of the competition.
Former Egyptian Ambassador in Moscow Dr. Mohamed El-Badry honored Salma Sorour for her outstanding performance at the contest. When she returned home, Ex-head of the Egyptian Foreign Culture Relations Department Kamilia Sobhi honored her on the International Music Day.
The head of the Egyptian Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities at the Russian Culture Center also honored Salma Sorour for her unique talent.
In 2015, she participated for the first time as a soloist in a concert of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she had an annual concert in the accompaniment of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra.
In 2016, she took part in the competition of the Ministry of Culture and won the first prize. She also participated in a concert in the accompaniment of the Cairo Conservatoire Orchestra.
In 2017, she took part in “Nicolas Latif” strings competition in Cairo and won the first prize, in the same year she took part in a concert in the accompaniment of the Bibliotheca Alexandria Orchestra.
In 2018, she had two concerts in Germany; the first was in Berlin’s “Konzerhaus” and the second was at Potsdam’s “Nikolaissal” theater. She also held in the same year her annual concert with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra.
Former Culture Minister Dr Inas Abdeldayem and Ex-head of the Cairo Opera House Dr Magdy Saber honored Salma Sorour and gave her the shield of the Ministry of Culture.
In 2019, she participated in a master class in Berlin with prof. Victor Tretyakov.
In 2021, she participated in the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade and played a solo that was written specially for her by the Egyptian composer Hesham Nazih.
In 2022, she participated in a master class with prof. Vadim Gluzman in the Erben Music Festival in Munich.
Founded in 1918 by Ernest Ansermet, who was its principal conductor until 1967, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) is made up of 112 permanent musicians. It gives subscription concerts in Geneva and Lausanne, symphonic programs for the City of Geneva, the annual United Nations Day concert and accompanies operatic performances at the Grand Théâtre of Geneva.
Over the decades, the OSR has built up an international reputation thanks to its historic recordings and its interpretation of the 20th-century French and Russian repertories.
The British conductor Jonathan Nott has served as the OSR’s Music and Artistic Director since January 2017, following in the steps of the OSR’s founding head and successive music directors: Paul Kletzki (1967-1970), Wolfgang Sawallisch (1970-1980), Horst Stein (1980-1985), Armin Jordan (1985-1997), Fabio Luisi (1997-2002), Pinchas Steinberg (2002-2005), Marek Janowski (2005-2012), Neeme Järvi (2012-2015), and its principal guest conductor Kazuki Yamada (2012-2017).
Under their guidance, the world-renowned OSR has actively contributed to the history of music through the discovery and support of contemporary composers. Works by Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Frank Martin, André-François Marescotti, Benjamin Britten, Witold Lutosławski, Heinz Holliger, William Blank, Peter Eötvös, James Macmillan, Pascal Dusapin and Michael Jarrell constitute just some of the OSR’s world premières.
The OSR has continually pursued the promotion and performance of new symphonic music, especially by Swiss composers, as one of its important missions.
