Egypt’s Menya University will launch later Thursday its first forum on promoting the role of public universities in eliminating violence against women. Public universities in Egypt have units for confronting gender-based violence.
The four-day event is organized in tandem with the National Council for Women and the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF).
Menya University President Moustafa Abdel Nabi said the forum is meant to tackle the challenges besetting eliminating violence against women in Upper Egypt and the impact of this phenomenon on females, families and the whole community.
The conferees will also exchange expertise and review new methods for eliminating violence against women and female genital mutilation, he said.
The conferees will also discuss ways of empowering women at the political, economic, social and cultural levels to capitalize on her potentials, he added.
The talks will also address means of securing a platform to bring to limelight the efforts being exerted by Egypt’s public units to empower women and curb violence against them, he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Hassan Sanad, the head of the Menya University unit for eliminating violence against women and the dean of the university’s faculty of law, said the get-together will also touch on the role of legislations in ditching gender-based violence.
An artistic festival will be organized on the fringe of the forum. Plays addressing women issues will be performed in addition to organizing seminars and symposiums in this regard.
Also, paintings on women issues will be on display.
Egypt is striving to eliminate violence against women and empower them in line with Sustainable Development Goal 5 which is meant to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
