Egypt allocated this year a budget of EGP 34.5 billion for governmental universities and institutes to improve educational services and hone students’ skills to join the labor market, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said.
This budget marks a 7 billion-pound uptick in comparison with the previous year, Abdel Ghaffar said at the Science Day ceremony on Sunday.
He added that about EGP 45.5 billion investments were earmarked for establishing private and international universities.
Abdel Ghaffar referred to the great contributions by the private sector to establish private universities, citing a presidential decree on establishing three private universities in the governorates of Gharbiya, Sohag and Assiut. This upped the number of private and non-profit private universities to 28 and 176 institutes.
He noted that the most important educational projects included three branches of King Salman University in South Sinai, New Mansoura University for science and technology, the second stage of the Egyptian-Japanese University for Science and Technology (E-JUST) and the second stage of Zewail City of Science and Technology.
He said these are smart universities that are engaged in partnerships with international organizations.
He added that Egyptian universities international ranking has advanced, referring to the listing of five Egyptian universities among top 1000 universities named by the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) which was released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy two days ago.
He added that 19 Egyptian universities was named among the best 1200 universities in 2019 in the Times Higher Education list.
This ranking, which was issued in September, included 19 Egyptian universities against nine in the 2018 ranking, eight in 2017 and only three in 2016.
He added that Egypt established three new technological universities that will start operation this academic year, noting that the state aims to set up a total of eight technological universities.
These universities are New Cairo Technological University, Delta Technological University and Beni Suef University. These universities are scheduled to graduate cadres qualified to cope with the fourth industrial revolution and emerging technologies.
He added that the Ministry of Higher Education is cooperating with the Ministry of Communications and IT to set up an Egyptian IT university in the New Administrative capital in line with directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
He added that efforts are underway to upgrade the IT infrastructure of Egyptian universities in preparation for joining the digital transformation drive in 2020.
He added that about EGP 23.6 billion was spent on research and development in 2019, at a 22 percent uptick in comparison with the previous year.
He added that more than 27 national projects in the fields of higher education and scientific research were spearheaded nationwide to serve the Egypt Vision 2030.
Egypt is working hard to attain the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on quality education.
