Egypt’s Helmy Abouleish, a prominent figure in the field of sustainable agriculture, particularly known for his pioneering work in biodynamic farming, was named among the 100 Most Influential Africans 2024 in the civil society category.
As CEO of the SEKEM, Abouleish has grown and transformed the organization founded by his father, Ibrahim Abouleish, into a global leader in sustainable agriculture.
Under Abouleish’s leadership, SEKEM has transformed over 47,000 acres into biodynamic farmland, working directly with more than 13,000 farmers.
This initiative has significantly improved agricultural productivity and the quality of life for many families by combining sustainable farming with support for education, healthcare, and social development.
One of the notable initiatives that he is credited with is the Economy of Love (EoL). Launched in 2019, the EoL Standard promotes sustainable practices across the entire supply chain. It has empowered Egyptian smallholder farmers by introducing a carbon credit scheme that recognizes their ecosystem services, enabling them to gain additional income streams through carbon certificates.
Abouleish is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development, the first university in the Middle East to put sustainable development at the core of its mission.
He has received numerous awards, while in 2024, Sekem received the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity.
SEKEM was honored in the Entrepreneurial Vision category of the 2024 Champions of the Earth of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
He has also been a member of prestigious organizations such as the World Economic Forum, Club of Rome, and the World Future Council.
Abouleish’s work has made a significant impact on agriculture in Egypt and beyond, showcasing the transformative potential of integrating ecological, economic, and social practices.
