Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said Egypt’s 2050 National Strategy for Climate Change – which was launched on Thursday – has three main goals to effectively confront the fallout of climate change.
The goals of the strategy include improving the quality of life of the Egyptian citizens, achieving sustainable economic growth and maintaining natural resources of the state, she said.
She said although Egypt contributes by about 0.61 percent to the global greenhouse gas emissions, it is one of the most vulnerable to the dangers of climate change, topped by the rise of sea water level and posing threat to water, food and agricultural security.
The strategy was launched during a press conference attended by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry as well as Ministers Hala Saeed of Planning, Tareq Mulla of Petroleum, Sayyed Quseir of Agricultur, Mohamed Maait of Finance, Nivine Gamea of Trade and Rania Mashat of International Cooperation.
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt Elena Panova also marked the launch of the strategy.
During the event, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli underlined the importance of the national strategy for climate change, noting that it has ambitious goals focusing on sustainable and low-carbon economic growth in various sectors.
He added that more actions are still in the pipeline, expounding that a national adaptation plan is being prepared along with drawing up an interactive map for the danger of climate change on Egypt to help decision-makers pinpoint potential dangers and take needed measures in various development sectors in addition to luring finance to adaptation projects.
He noted that Egypt has also laid down a low-carbon development strategy until 2030 and this strategy is being updated to 2050.
He added that Egypt adopted the 2035 sustainable energy strategy that aims at boosting the contribution of renewable energy to generating electricity and improving energy efficiency.
He noted that Egypt has also implemented several renewable energy projects, topped by the Benban solar energy plant, in order to become a regional energy hub through producing and exporting clean energy.
He also referred to sustainable transportation projects, like the Cairo Metro and the monorail, as well as smart and sustainable management of waste.
He added that Egypt managed to issue its first green bonds at dlrs 750 million, thus placing Egypt on the sustainable financing map.
He concluded that Egypt will exert all needed efforts for the 27th United Nations climate Change Conference (COP27) to move from the stage of commitments to action
