The Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education launched the 2023 best eco-friendly university competition from April 1 to July.
The contest – under the patronage of Higher Education Minister Ayman Ashour – is meant to encourage Egyptian universities to become green through assessing university’s vision for protecting the environment and realizing sustainability, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Universities Moustafa Refat said.
The competition also assesses universities’ commitment to contribute to developing eco-friendly infrastructure as well as the standards of energy, waste management, climate change, water management, environment quality, crises management, and scientific research and education.
Universities can apply for the contest from April 1 to 7, he said, noting that applying universities will be shortlisted in May.
The best shortlisted six universities will be inspected by the contest-organizing committee in preparation for announcing the best eco-friendly university in July.
Refat noted that the Supreme Council of Universities launched for the first time an e-platform to digitally receive files and videos of applicants in order to protect the environment through cutting paper consumption and saving printing costs.
It is worth mentioning that 17 Egyptian universities were placed among 1050 universities on the 2022 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings which focus on the universities’ commitment to addressing the issues of sustainability and environmental impact.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings represent a ranking on green campus and environmental sustainability initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. Through 39 indicators in 6 criteria, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings prudently determined the rankings by universities’ environmental commitment and initiatives.
