Planning Minister Hala Saeed said EGP 350 billion was earmarked for the first stage of the national project for developing the Egyptian countryside “Decent Life“, highlighting that Faris village in the Upper Egypt governorate of Awan attained all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The funds are channeled into implementing 23,000 projects in 1,477 villages in 20 governorates with beneficiaries estimated at 18 million people, she said.
Upper Egypt governorates swallowed almost 68 percent of the funds.
She added that the Decent Life projects meet the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
About 85 percent of the first stage was accomplished.
Under the Decent Life projects, health facilities were upgraded alongside sanitation grids, electricity network, roads and agricultural centers.
Natural gas services were extended to 173 villages within the framework of promoting use of clean energy resources.
About 305 government service complexes were accomplished in addition to establishing 776 post offices, 231 police stations, and 259 electricity and lighting projects with an aim to improve the services offered to citizens.
Also, 629 projects for lining canals were finalized in addition to setting up 286 agricultural centers to boost agricultural production.
Fifteen main roads and 20 sub-roads were upgraded in addition to overhauling 60 railway stations.
Nine water treatment stations were finalized alongside 739 sewage projects.
About 169 drinking water stations were finalized with an aim to secure water services by 100 percent.
Optic fiber network was extended to 187 villages in order to improve mobile phone network services within the context of the state’s efforts for digital transformation and mechanizing services.
About 124 local bank branches were established and developed in addition to installing 563 ATM machines with an aim to expand financial inclusion.
About 382 health units were finalized alongside a central hospital, and 317 ambulance units.
A total of EGP 15 billion were secured for offering loans for small and medium sized enterprises.
A report by the Planning Ministry highlighted the green village initiative that was spearheaded under “Decent Life” national project.
Upgrading villages under the Decent Life initiative is meant to get villages to cope with the up-to-date international environment standards of the World Green Building Council and obtain “rationalization certificate” for green communities.
The first stage included upgrading 20 villages to be green, the report said, noting that measures have been taken to qualify 19 villages to get the “rationalization certificate” for green communities.
Faris village in the Upper Egypt governorate of Aswan was the first Egyptian village to obtain the “rationalization”certificate in Egypt as it managed to achieve all the sustainable development goals.
