Zeinab Hegazy, the Communication, Public Affairs & Sustainability Director for CEMEX Egypt, said the company seeks to cut its carbon emissions by 40 percent for each ton of its cement products by 2030.
In statements to CSR Egypt, she said the company has an ambitious goal of having carbon-neutral concrete by 2050.
CEMEX is working hard to build better future through offering sustainable solutions and products as the company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality and recycling waste to be an alternative raw materials for fuel in various operations, she said, stressing that this goes in line with the 2050 national strategy for climate change which is being implemented by the Egyptian state in partnership with the private sector as Egypt gears up to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).
Hegazy underlined the importance of backing all efforts addressing climate change action and the sustainable development goals, noting that the company has recently launched Vertua products which represented its first-ever net-zero CO2 concrete.
This marked a watershed stage in its drive for carbon neutrality, she said, adding that CEMEX is one of the first companies in Egypt to introduce eco-friendly pozzolanic cement in 2018.
She noted that the company’s production of the normal portland cement in Egypt does not exceed 4 percent of its products, adding that this underscores the company’s commitment to its environmental goals.
She expounded that the company has a robust environmental management system under which modern filters – meeting the Egyptian and European standards – are being used.
She added that the company is keeping in touch with the Environment Ministry and is keen on using alternative fuel in its operations in addition to having an integrated mechanism for managing and sorting waste.
She said CEMEX comes at the forefront of construction material companies that have adopted an integrated digital transformation plan. In 2018, the company launched an interactive digital platform “CEMEX Go” which was the first of its kind in Egypt.
CEMEX Go offers the company’s customers a digital service with which they can place orders, track products and delivery times, send receipts and invoices, manage payments and present complaints and suggestions, all in a friendly, simple, and quick way.
