Assistant Minister of Social Solidarity for Investment and Resources Development Hassan Moustafa said environmental and climate issues are on the agenda of all governments and organizations worldwide in order to achieve sustainability and reduce climate change effects.
He made the remarks in a speech which he delivered on behalf of Social Solidarity Minister Nivine Kabbag at the 6th Forum on Strategies for Transition to Green Economy.
Sustainability of life depends on the sustainability of its basic components, and the environment is the main pillar of life on Earth. Therefore, there is special focus on environmental sustainability and environmental protection, he said.
Climate change issues have become critical, and everyone is seeking solutions to preserve life on Earth.
Not only countries and institutions are concerned with environmental issues, but also every individual, Moustafa said.
He highlighted the ongoing efforts to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), secure sustainable finance and provide assessment tools of environmental and developmental impact.
These three pillars are the focus of any strategy to implement environmental sustainability standards, Moustafa expounded.
The environmental dimension is not a luxury, but an integral part of any strategy adopted by the Ministry of Social Solidarity.
He stressed the importance of raising environmental awareness and changing the culture and mindset of the Egyptian people.
Moustafa explained that changing people’s culture should come ahead of providing financing, as financing without having needed culture will be an absolute waste.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity is working to reduce poverty rates, which affect the individual’s culture, in order to shift from benevolence to employment and training, he said.
The Ministry has a special fund for developing rural industries and it is keen on applying environmental sustainability standards.
Egypt has developed a national strategy for transition to green economy, and all its institutions are speaking the language of sustainability, he underscored.
The government has focused on the green economy as an aspiration for achieving sustainable development, adding that this will help realize an economic leap, while taking into account the social dimension in order to achieve comprehensive sustainable development in all parts of Egypt.
