Egypt’s Adventurer and Sustainability Ambassador Ali Abdo – Multiple Guinness World Records Holder on electric vehicle (EV) – has finalized 58-day Ride to COP28 with an aim to raise awareness of climate change and promote sustainable practices.
Ali Abdo commenced the “Ride to COP28” at the heart of COP27, Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh, then toured several parts of Egypt on his electric bike ahead of moving to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, where he will join COY18.
During his journey in Egypt, Abdo visited several key UNDP Egypt supported projects and locations to promote climate action and sustainability, including the installations of solar power stations at the Grand Egyptian Museum, Bike Sharing Program at Fayoum University, Climate Change Adaptation project in Damietta, solar power stations in Sharm El Sheikh, and protected areas with solar installations in Nabq and Ras Mohamed.
As the Ride to COP28 arrived at its final destination in UAE, Ali Abdo decided to raise the bar of his mission and accept Drive Terra challenge to ride its electric bike around the 7 Emirates without a single charge.
Drive Terra, a mobility start-up based in the UAE, introduced their groundbreaking Battery Swapping solution as they became the first to introduce this cutting-edge technology in MENA.
Abdo started his 7 emirates tour from the heart of the UAE in Abu Dhabi, then moved through the cultural wonders of Sharjah, the serene landscapes of Ajman, the historical charm of Umm Al Quwain, the breathtaking vistas of Ras Al Khaimah, and the coastal beauty of Fujairah. The final destination on this ride was the COP28 UAE city #Dubai.
Ali Abdo lauded the tour on his Facebook page saying “Thank you, Drive Terra, for the exceptional experience of riding your electric bike around the 7 Emirates at the final stage of the Ride to COP28 UAE. The main objective of the Ride to COP28 is to engage with young people by visiting universities and sports clubs to educate them about climate change and inspire them to take action toward a more sustainable future.
The Ride to COP28 also aims to establish a new Guinness World Record for visiting the most countries on an electric motorcycle, to generate more media coverage and reach a broader audience to impact communities and contribute towards a more sustainable future positively.
This multifaceted initiative seeks to raise awareness about the urgent need for climate action, empower Arab youth to address climate challenges, and provide a platform for sharing success stories and sustainable solutions.
This initiative is also held in collaboration with the League of Arab States – General Secretariat, local NGO Earth’s Climate for Sustainable Development and is sponsored by the Ministry of Youth & Sports of Egypt and the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, to champion climate action, foster meaningful dialogues, and pave the way for innovative solutions that drive sustainable transformation.
The “Ride to COP28” is an expedition that transcends borders. As this remarkable journey unfolds, it will undoubtedly inspire individuals and nations to join hands and embark on their unique paths towards a greener, more sustainable future.
At the end of the ride, Ali Abdo highlighted on his Facebook page that “Crossing the Arab world on an electric motorcycle was a difficult and unprecedented challenge… The journey doesn’t end here – it’s a continuation of our commitment to raising awareness and inspiring change, all while embracing the future of sustainable transportation…The world urgently needs to set aside its #ego and work together to effectively address the global challenges that confront us.”
“This reminds me of the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development Goal 17 – ‘Partnerships for the Goals.’ SDG 17 emphasizes the need for countries, organizations, and individuals to unite, share knowledge, resources, and expertise, and collaborate on innovative solutions,” he added.
“While we may have our aspirations for success stories, it’s essential to acknowledge the significance of collective efforts in realizing a sustainable and prosperous future for all. By coming together and working in unison, we can effectively address global challenges, make a positive impact on the world, and contribute to a brighter and more equitable future for everyone,” he said.
