African leaders are expected to step up calls for financial support to help the continent adapt to the climate crisis as Africa as a whole contributes to less than 3 percent of total global emissions.
African leaders will gather in Nairobi, Kenya next week for Africa Climate Week, an annual get-together where they are expected to discuss ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to the mounting fallout from the climate crisis.
The conferees are also expected to exchange view on climate solutions, barriers to overcome and opportunities realized in different regions.
The event, which kicks off on 4 September, is scheduled to feature policymakers, business leaders and environmental campaigners from across the continent.
It comes as temperatures in Africa are rising faster than many other parts of the world, causing more frequent extreme weather events and prolonged droughts, leading to food shortages and loss of lives.
Africa Climate Week is one of four regional climate weeks held this year. It is designed to build momentum ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai.
Africa Climate Week 2023 is organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Environment Program and the World Bank, with the support of regional partners.
