Egyptian universities took the lion’s share of Arab universities included on the 2021-2022 Shangahai World University Rankings with 17 Egyptian universities listed.
Cairo University came at the top of Egyptian universities on the list ranking number 546, followed by Ain Shams University (797).
The list also comprises Mansoura University (984), Alexandria University (999), Assiut University (1190), Suez Canal University (1209), Zagazig University (1297), Fayyoum University (1315), British University in Egypt (1353), Tanta University (1473), Helwan University (1521), Beni Suef University (1575), Azhar University (1578), Menofia University (1683), Minia University (1802), Benha University (1866) and Sohag University (1881).
The Shangahi university rankings are issued by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) which publishes the only academic ranking of global universities that assesses the quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, and research performance without relying on surveys and university data submissions.
CWUR uses seven objective and robust indicators grouped into four areas to rank the world’s universities.
The center assess “Quality of Education” which is measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have won major academic distinctions relative to the university’s size (25%)
The second area is “Alumni Employment” which is measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held top executive positions at the world’s largest companies relative to the university’s size (25%).
The third area is “Quality of Faculty” which is measured by the number of faculty members who have won major academic distinctions (10%).
The fourth area is “Research Performance” which is assessed according to Research Output, high-quality publications, influence, and citations.
The list included other Arab universities of Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Morocco, UAE, Lebanon, Algeria, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.
The list included nine Saudi universities; 278 King Abdulaziz University (278), 304 King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (304), King Saud University (371), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (705), King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (1440), King Khalid University (1792), Alfaisal University (1805), Taibah University (1826), and Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (1918).
Five Tunisian universities were on the list; Tunis El Manar University (52), University of Sfax (1143), University of Carthage (1344), University of Monastir (1359), and University of Sousse Tunisia (1983).
The list also included four Moroccan universities; Mohammed V University (946), Mohamed First University Oujda (1028), Cadi Ayyad University (1034), and Hassan II University of Casablanca (1075).
Three UAE universities were on the list; Khalifa University (945), United Arab Emirates University (1254) , and University of Sharjah (1757).
The list also included two Lebanese universities; American University of Beirut (725) and Lebanese University (1938).
Two Algerian universities – University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene (1819) and University of Djillali Liabès, Sidi Bel-Abbès (1935) were on the list.
The list also comprised two Jordanian universities – University of Jordan (1430) and Jordan University of Science and Technology (1351).
The list also included two Qatari universities – Qatar University (981) and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (1832) – alongside Kuwait University (1332) and Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University (1380).
