Seventeen Egyptian universities were placed among 1050 universities on the 2022 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings which focus on the universities’ commitment to addressing the issues of sustainability and environmental impact.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings represent a ranking on green campus and environmental sustainability initiated by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. Through 39 indicators in 6 criteria, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings prudently determined the rankings by universities’ environmental commitment and initiatives.
The rankings recognized the need for a uniform system that would be appropriate for universities around the world and where the outcomes were based on a numerical score that would allow ranking. This led to comparisons between universities’ rankings that could be made on the criteria of their commitment to addressing the issues of sustainability and environmental impact.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings are utilizing a set of criteria that have been considered to be straightforward and simple to complete while still credible on critical indicators. In the current performance evaluation tool there are 39 indicators and 6 criteria i.e. Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transportation (TR), and Education (ED).
The American University in Cairo ranked no 134 followed by Cairo University no 270, Benha University no 275, and Kafer El Sheikh University no 276.
Ain Shams University came in the 316th position, while October 6 University ranked no 328, Sohag University no 355, Beni-Suef University no 374, Misr University for Science and Technology no 397, Damietta University no 433, Tanta University no 485, and Minia University no 554.
Al-Azhar University ranked no 618, University of Sadat City no 643, South Valley University no 865 and the Egyptian Russian University no 935.
The top ten universities on the UI GreenMetric World are UniversityWageningen University & Research of Netherlands, Nottingham Trent University fo the UK, University of Nottingham of the UK, University of Groningen of Netherlands, University of California of the US, Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld (Trier University of Applied Sciences) of Germany, University College Cork of Ireland, University of Connecticut of the US, Universitat Bremen of Germany and Universidade de Sao Paulo USP of Brazil.
