Maali Khader, Founder and CEO of Schema, said Egyptian companies\u2019 readiness for sustainable exports increasingly depends not only on product quality and competitiveness but also on the availability of environmental, social and governance (ESG) data, particularly carbon footprint disclosures, which have become essential to building trust with international markets and unlocking new growth opportunities.<\/p>\n

Khader made the remarks during a panel discussion titled \u201cCorporate Readiness for Sustainable Export: How Can ESG Data Build Trust, Market Access and Growth Opportunities?\u201d<\/a> as part of Egypt Sustainable Business Week.<\/p>\n

She said products associated with carbon emissions may face carbon<\/a> costs, noting that Egypt has issued rules requiring financial and non-financial institutions to disclose carbon emissions. This makes access to reliable emissions data essential for companies seeking to maintain their export operations and enter foreign markets.<\/p>\n

ESG compliance: Growing cost for businesses:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khader said the key question facing companies is how to prepare for these requirements. While research points to growing awareness among financing providers of the importance of ESG considerations, meeting related requirements remains costly for many businesses.<\/p>\n

She explained that measuring a company’s carbon footprint involves three main scopes. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company, such as fuel consumed by its vehicles. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions associated with purchased electricity and cooling systems, while Scope 3 encompasses emissions embedded in the materials and services a company purchases, making it the most challenging and complex category to measure.<\/p>\n

She urged companies to start identifying, measuring and regularly tracking these emissions, warning that neglecting such data could expose businesses to significant challenges as disclosure and sustainability requirements tighten in international markets.<\/p>\n

Supply chain data: The biggest challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n

Khader raised questions about how different supply chain participants can cooperate to provide the required information and whether each party understands its importance.<\/p>\n

She noted that the necessary data is often unavailable or difficult to obtain, while some suppliers do not recognize the importance of providing it, particularly those operating at the later stages of supply chains.<\/p>\n

Regulators and customers are increasingly relying on this information to make decisions, raising concerns over the reliability of data provided by different parties, she said.<\/p>\n

Verifying data does not necessarily mean reviewing and correcting every piece of information across the entire supply chain. Rather, it requires establishing a system that assigns responsibility for providing accurate information to each participant, Khader explained.<\/p>\n

Incentives can encourage accurate disclosure:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Addressing these challenges requires raising awareness among suppliers and companies about the importance of ESG data and linking accurate disclosure to tangible benefits and incentives, she said.<\/p>\n

Reliable data can help companies maintain commercial relationships and secure their continued participation in supply chains. Khader cited the possibility of ministries and relevant authorities offering incentives and rewards to employees and institutions that prepare and disclose accurate data.<\/p>\n

She stressed that companies lacking sustainability and carbon footprint data risk losing their competitive position, particularly when competing against businesses able to provide such information and comply with market requirements.<\/p>\n

ESG disclosure is no longer merely an administrative exercise but has become a key tool for building trust, retaining customers and expanding export market opportunities, she concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
